Biography

I appreciate the opportunity to share with you my interpretation of wildflowers in "Another View." Over thirteen years ago, my journey of wildflower photography began by helping a young man with his science project. The close-up shooting started out with a macro lens. The prints were so-so and not what I was looking for. By accident, I attached a 2X lens on my macro and a whole new world of wildflowers came into view. I soon realized that what I wanted to project was not a field guide to wildflowers, but an artistic expression of their individuality. I also started to see themes emerge-one of which included accidental glimmers of light. While shooting a flower under the shade of a tree, a spot of light would filter through onto the flower. The effect was always a keeper. Three years ago, I found a technique that allowed me to "step out of the forest" of wildflower photographers. This technique brings in natural light and keeps the flowers in their original setting. I have been devoted to the "In the Light" theme ever since. The "Light" has a hold on me; something magical occurs with a flower under this technique. The "Light" has a life of its own and its source seems to come from within. The flowers that have been so familiar reveal something entirely new. The wildflowers that I chose to photograph were usually very small. After moving to Louisiana I found that I needed to broaden the appeal of my technique to a larger audience. I decided to accept the challenge and apply this presentation of photography on larger "Garden Variety" flowers. In all cases, my photos are taken in the field under natural sunlight. Photos are not digitally altered. The flowers under this lighting technique give their own individual expression, which stands alone, requiring no enhancements. My wife, Debbie, and I moved to Sulphur, LA, in 2004 after spending 15 years in the Austin, TX area. We both grew up in Ponca City, OK and we have one daughter, Alesha Lucas and her husband, Darren. I am a Research Chemist (Biologist) for SASOL North America and Debbie is the Manager for Wildflowers, Another View, our hope for the future. My work can be found in several corporate and private collections and has appeared in four publications. I am a member of the North American Nature Photographer Association.
